I want to study French as a beginner
FREN1001 is a course intended for complete beginners in French and does not require any previous knowledge of the language. The course offers a broad introduction to the French language and culture of contemporary France. While participants will learn how to express themselves in French and understand the fundamentals of the language, they will also gain a deeper appreciation of the French society, its cultural heritage, and its way of life. What should I do if I have previous studies in French?
​
Based on your level of proficiency in French, we will evaluate which French course is suitable for you. We will then discuss your study plan and assist you with the course registration procedure. Please contact the programme director by email (sylvainh@hku.hk) and provide details about your previous studies.
What are my chances of being accepted in FREN1001?
​
French is a popular choice among HKU students and the demand is high. FREN1001 will admit a maximum of 125 students in the academic year 2024-2025. Priority will be given to:

Y1 and Y2 Bachelor of Arts students (BA) who have enrolled in FREN1001 AND FREN1002. This includes BA, BA&LLB, BA&BEd(LangEd)-Eng, BA&BEd(LangEd)-Chi and BASc.

Y2 BA and Non-BA students who have declared a major in GLAS or a minor in French, and have enrolled in both FREN1001 AND FREN1002.

What if my application for FREN1001 is not approved?
​
Students who failed to register FREN1001 in the first application round (6-12 August 2024) are invited to apply again in the second round of application (Add/Drop Period beginning 2 September 2024).​
